2 surgeries + 3 trips to the ER = 0 tonsils

Now you may be wondering what this slew of medications is doing on my blog, but it explains pretty much my whole month of June.  I went in to the hospital to get my tonsils out on June 13...what a blessed day (a complete exaggeration if you couldn't tell).  My mom flew in from Virginia to take care of me and it was such a blessing to have her here.  I mean, even though I'm 23, when I'm sick all I want is still my mom.  So I got my old tonsils out and I had been warned that it was one of the most painful surgeries that adults can ever undergo.  They said I'd be miserable.  Ha!  In my mind I was thinking "Bring it on" because little did I know that my idea of miserable was nothing like the miserable I had coming.  The first few days weren't too bad.  I just napped all day and ate about 1-2 apple sauces a day.  Then days 5-7 hit...I was in PAIN!  I really thought I'd be better off for someone to shoot me to put me out of my misery.  The pain was bad but the other bad part was that the pain meds made me sick to my stomach and made me see double.  Needless to say I think the incoherent things I was saying were a little interesante.  So then it came time a week later for me to return to work and I was quite pleased with myself that I had healed faster than they told me I would.  I was still a little tipsy, but up and working nonetheless.  Then on day 11 at midnight, my throat started bleeding really bad.  This had already happened once before and I went to the ER but it had stopped bleeding before the doctor came in so they sent me home.  So this time I waited an hour and tried to get it to stop myself with ice.  It didn't stop so Syrell took me to the ER and we waited a good 2 hours and the doctor came in and it had developed a huge clot so they didn't want to touch it and sent me home.  Not an hour later, I swallowed and the lovely clot came off too...and the fountain of blood started flowing even more and it was just dripping down into my stomach.  They took me right back to the ER again by myself and they didn't have a doctor that knew how to cauterize my throat there so I had to wait a good 1 1/2 hours for one to come in.  So at 6; 30 am he came in and tried to cauterize my throat using suction with me awake and needless to say I started vomiting blood everywhere (I did swallow a lot in the last 6 hours!).   So they couldn't fix all the cut so they had to rush me back to the OR and perform an emergency surgery to cauterize my throat.  Everything turned out well and I was back on my usual spot on the couch at home in no time for the duration of the week.  I am doing so much better now and feeling like a brand new person with my tonsils out.  You may not even recognize me...just kidding.  It was funny though because I always thought I had a curse on me and I feel like it was confirmed with this mishap.  I was told that bleeding after surgery only happens to 1 out of every 100 people so I would just like to send this to all the other 99 and let them know I took one for the team!  And thanks to all those who checked up on me, sent ice cream, flowers, movies and so on.  My ward literally lined up outside my apartment to bring me goods and send their love.  My mom was an angel to stay by me and my cousins were so sweet to drive me all over to get perscriptions and make soup for me. I feel so blessed and am so happy and thankful to be alive and well!  I guess it takes an experience like that to realize how quick life can change in an instant and how the Lord really is in control.  It also opened my eyes to being more sympathetic to my patients.  I had great nurses who held my hand while I was continually vomiting, and it made all the difference.  So thanks!!

I think some ocean air will help the healing process.

The Latest...

Recently, I packed up my Western self and moved out East to a little place called Virginia. My parents relocated out here about 2 years ago, so it was time I check out VA for myself. It is in the DC metro area, so we spend lots of fun time in the city or in the country. I am still working as a pediatric nurse and looking to maybe move towards the non-profit or political side of health care. I gained a new family member in the form of a Chinese exchange student named Donna, and I love being with my parents again. Life is good.
